What is Holiday Sharing?

Jazmyn Zurita

The holiday season is finally here, which means that it’s time for Holiday Sharing to begin at Aloha High School.

The holiday season at AHS is always fun!

For those of you who don’t know, Holiday Sharing is a long-time AHS tradition that has been going on for more than twenty years. Aloha adopts families and the Sparrow family to give them things they need. A Sparrow is someone who is sick and is getting help from the school for anything they need. Aloha helps these families by giving donations like food, toiletries, clothes, or anything else that they need.

A way that students can help is through Donation Domination, which ends on December 13. Donation Domination is when you donate things for the 24 families and the 100 homeless students the school “adopts.” Students bring donations to their access tutorial classroom; the class with the most donations win a donut and hot chocolate party! If students would like to donate money, $25 dollar Target or Fred Meyer gift cards are the preferred donations. These cards go to our 100 homeless teens. Of course, traditional donations of socks, scarves, gloves, underwear, cleaning supplies, toiletries (especially travel size), and any other personal goods are all needed. Many students also donate canned goods, other nonperishables, presents, and even Christmas trees, which are all definitely needed!

AHS’s 2016 tree sale is one of the school’s bigger fundraisers. To order online, simply visit the page linked here. Be quick though: tree orders are due by Tuesday, December 6!

Such fantastic prices!

Another way is by purchasing presents for the giving train, ordering a tree, buying a Holiday Sharing shirt, and buying a Winter Wish. The money raised goes directly to the sponsored families and is used to get them basic essentials.

Families can take a ticket from the Giving Train (formerly the Giving Tree) and bring back the specific gift listed by Monday, December 12. The gifts go to our 100 homeless teens.

A Winter Wish is a request that students can turn in by submitting a slip into a box outside K-1. Wishes can range from getting your best friend a small candy, delivering a sweet compliment to that secret crush, or giving a nice surprise to an unappreciated teacher. If the wish is kept to $3 and under, it may come true!

The “We Believe” Holiday Sharing shirts are blue, long-sleeved shirts. They’ll be sold for $15 and have the design as seen below:

Leadership sets up everything for spirit week. They organize the cans, wrap special presents to the families, and deliver all the donations and awesome presents to their recipients. If you know anybody in Leadership, be sure to give a quick thanks! Holiday sharing is something that really helps the people in need, so if you can (pun intended) please donate and help! We believe in the power of our community and believe that we can make a difference together.
